Notes!
The genealogical researches carried out into La Famille
Le Sauteur (Le Saulteur) by us, F. and K. Le Maistre, have necessitated
several hundred hours, in one form or another, consulting the
Registres de paroisse
(Baptêmes, Naissances, Mariages et Enterrements) of
St. Clément, St. Sauveur, St. Hélier, St. Martin, La
Trinité and Grouville, and also much time piecing the relevant evidence
together which has been gathered over a period of many months
and with much patience.
Finally,
we resorted to researches on the other Island archives, namely
the Registres des Contrats, a vast repository of the records
of land, property, etc., transactions for hundreds of years.
Most of the result of all this is here set forth accurately,
to the best of our knowledge, but as one might say, "sauf
erreurs ou omissions". Further search would of course be
necessary to perhaps probe beyond the ancestor first given (not
an easy task, since earlier records are deficient), as well
as for the various collaterals down the generations, another
time-consuming task indeed.
Though the
first mention we find of the name in Jersey dates from 1528,
in the Extentes, the family will have been here most certainly
long before that. However, at this date a Jean Le Sauteur was
well established in La paroisse de Grouville, and one branch
of the family is there to this day. But, there appears to be
no doubt that the male line of that branch is, unfortunately,
now nearing extinction. An indication of the antiquity of the
family in Jersey is the act that amongst the many Fiefs in the
Island is that of le Fief ès Sauteur (or Le Fief au Sauteux)
which is in La Vintaine des Marais, à Grouville.
Although
we cannot vouch for one hundred per cent accuracy in the compilation
of this arbre généalogique or family tree (it is indeed doubtful
whether any one family could lay claim to that!), and since
further extensive research would be necessary, with the information
so far laboriously gathered its authenticiy is as good as it
may be possible to obtain.
The Le Sauteur's
on the genealogical table would appear to stem from La paroisse
de St.Sauveur, though we know the Jean of 1528 was well established
at that time in La paroisse de Grouville. Furthermore, since
Le Fief au Sauteux in Grouville must have been thus designated
long before that date, we can assume La Famille Le Sauteur ou
Le Saulteur originally belonged to Grouville.
As can be
seen, branches eventually established themselves in every parish
of the East of the Island. There is good reason to believe the
various branches are descended from one common ancestor but,
although we have observed seemingly close connections between
the branches, we have left some on the tree with a dotted line
since we have not found absolute proof of relationship.
